Vegetable-tanned leather with a felt backing, cut square and left with a raw edge that burnishes rather than being painted. An optical mouse tracks on it without trouble, and unlike a coated pad it takes on the shape of use — darker where your hand rests, which after a year is the only part of a desk that shows you have been there.

Materials
3mm vegetable-tanned cowhide from a tannery that still uses bark liquors, backed with wool felt. Vegetable tanning is slower and costs more than chrome, and it is the only tannage that develops colour instead of just wearing.
Care
Nothing for the first year. After that, a little neutral leather balm worked in with a cloth if it looks dry. Keep it out of standing water — leather and a spilled glass are not friends.
